The Essentials of the County of Aveyron
The most beautiful French villages in Aveyron, the fortified towns of Rouergue, the Templier and Hospitaller villages of the Larzac, the important beauty spots of the Midi Pyrénées
The Aveyron is a large county of 8735 km2 with an altitude which varies between 144m and 1463m.
The altitude at Vezes is 450m.
We benefit from an annual sunshine rate of 2300 hours, whereas in the North of France the rate goes down to 1300 hours and in the South up to 2700 hours. The county is largely rural with 60% agricultural, 30% woods and forests, with a population of 275889 inhabitants in 2012. The county town is Rodez.
Our county is composed of several regions, the Segala with its 100 valleys where we are situated, and the Grands Causses (Causse noir, Causse de Dolmen de Tiergues, Causse du Comtal, Causse de Séverac) Plateau du Lévezou, Plateau du Larzac, Monts d’Aubrac, Monts de Lacaune, Roc du Cayla.
On foot, by bike, on horseback, swimming, para-gliding and even by car
It is essential that you discover the big lakes, the viaducts, the 30 châteaux, the wine routes of Marcillac and Gaillac in the Tarn, the rolling hills of the Aubrac and the Larzac. If you hike along the path of St Jacques de Compostelle you will discover : Conques, an important cultural centre with a 20th century museum specialised in Roman art, Estaing, a medieval town with the château of the Estaing Counts, Espalion, in pink sandstone with its « son et lumière », St Eulalie d’Olt, a medieval village and fishing paradise, St Côme d’Olt, an unusual Hospitaller village, Sauveterre de Rouergue, a royal fortified 11th century village with half-timbered houses, Brousse le Château, an exceptional medieval site where two rivers meet, Belcastel, a dominating and exciting château, Najac, a royal fortress, bathed in sunlight and surrounded by a medieval village, La Couvertoirade, a fortified Templier and Hospitaller village in the heart of the Larzac, Peyre, cut out of the cliff with its troglodyte church and a magnificent view of the Millau Viaduct, Naucelle et le château du Bosc which belonged to the family of Toulouse Lautrec, where you can discover his paintings, history and life, only 15 minutes from the Château de Vezes, which was also a frequent meeting place between the two families during this time.
In this exceptional region we invite you to our 4 charming Ecogites
Independent or in pairs, restored in a vast 16th and 17th century stone-built house of character with an eco-swimming pool. We are situated in a small quiet hamlet typical of the Segala in the heart of the Aveyron countryside with views stretching away over the hills.
To be discovered and rediscovered ad infinitum !
